Tonight’s Republican debate was nothing short of a WWE Smackdown; all that was missing were a few thrown chairs and body slams. The other debates were certainly spirited, and every candidate ramped up on their tone and rhetoric. Governor Kasich in particular seemed to take things to a nearly hostile level; perhaps because he has such low standing in the polls, he and his team feel that he has nothing to lose.
The takeaway of the night seems to be the interchange between Senator Rubio and Governor Bush; Bush made a point to jump in on a question regarding Rubio missing votes in the Senate because he’s been campaigning to be President.
Bush said, “Marco, when you signed up for this, this was a six-year term and you should be showing up to work. What is this, like a French work week?” He followed up with, “Just resign and let someone else take the job.” Rubio’s quick response? “The only reason you’re doing it now is because we’re running for the same position.”
Governor Christie gained points with a quick answer; when the asinine question was asked if fantasy sports should be considered as gambling, his response was, “Are we really talking about getting the government involved in fantasy football? We have $19 trillion in debt, people are out of work, we have ISIS and Al-Qaeda attacking us and we’re talking about fantasy football? Who cares!”
However, it’s hard to gather who won the debate because the candidates spent most of the night arguing with the moderators and talking over each other. If I had to pick, I’d go with Rubio, since he actually answered most of the questions and stuck to his narrative. Unfortunately, because of tonight’s theatrics, American voters are the losers.
